If I could keep just one oil, I would choose lavender. It is the one that everything begins with.
Lavender fits almost everywhere. For sleep and restlessness, for skin and burns, for children and for you. That is why it is the first oil I would suggest keeping at home - easy to begin with, hard to be without.
In aromapsychology lavender is called the oil of communication and calm. It soothes inner insecurity and the fear of opening up, and helps you say what sits on your heart. This is an oil for those who are used to hiding real feelings behind a smile.
Half an hour before bed I drop a few drops of Lavender and Orange into the diffuser. Lavender quiets the storms inside, and the body slowly lets go. The evening turns softer, and the night runs deeper.
Recipe: 3 drops of Lavender + 2 drops of Orange into the diffuser, 30 min before sleep. When it feels uneasy inside, a few drops of Lavender on the palms or in the diffuser bring the calm back. It helps you look at your worries more gently, from a little distance. It is the softest calming oil, so for a first ritual nothing else is needed.
I keep Lavender in the kitchen so it stays within reach. After a scald or when skin gets irritated, it becomes first aid. In a face serum I pair it with Frankincense and Copaiba - the skin settles and feels soft.
Recipe: 10 drops Frankincense + 10 Lavender + 10 Copaiba + YL V-6 carrier oil in a 30 ml serum bottle.Lavender is gentle, so it suits little ones too. I dab a drop diluted with a carrier onto the soles of the feet before sleep, when the evening was too loud. When the child settles, the mother settles too.
In the evening I love the bedroom to smell of calm. I spritz the pillow and the curtains with a lavender mist, and the space becomes a real place of rest.
Recipe: 100 ml of water + 15 drops of Lavender in a spray bottle, mist the bedding. For the evening: Lavender + Orange into the diffuser.
For skin: a drop of Lavender with a carrier on the irritated spot.
For calm: 2 drops on the palms, rub, breathe in deeply.
Lavender does nothing loudly. It simply reminds the body, softly, that it is already safe to let go.
Lavender is one of the most commonly counterfeited oils on the market. Up to 90% of the "lavender oil" being sold is diluted, mixed with cheaper lavandin or fully synthetic. A 2024 study showed that only about half of the tested samples were genuine.
This is why I choose Young Living. Gary Young, the founder, created the Seed to Seal standard - the path from seed to cap. During distillation the composition is checked every ten minutes. When you breathe in, you breathe in real lavender, the one that is meant to calm you.
You will find Lavender in the Premium starter kit with a diffuser - it is the simplest way to begin.

Essential oils are traditionally used to support a sensory ritual and wellbeing. This is not a medical remedy. Always dilute with a carrier oil and do a sensitivity test. Every body is unique - listen to your own.
